Phew! A relief. :-) Your subject line scared me at first, but turns out to be a bit misleading,
as it is not a compile error, but a linkage error. It is about trying to execute compiled
bytecode pointing to a method that was removed or whose signature has changed. The compiled
versions of PageNumberLayoutManager and Area seem to be out of synch.

Seems to be pointing to another (older) fop.jar somewhere in the classpath, as org.apache.fop.area.Area.addTrait()
had (Object, Object), but was changed to (Integer, Object) in r1062901.
