Howdy:

I want to suggest a very fine request-response framework that can make
jetspeed-2 a powerful portal adaptable to any service extension and
presentation engine. The pattern was developed by Struts committers
based on commons-chain:
http://cvs.apache.org/viewcvs/jakarta-commons-sandbox/chain/WHITEBOARD.html

The proof of concept via servlet protocol has been successfully
completed using current nightly build of struts-example. All existing
struts facilities and plug-ins should work.

The codes for JSR-168 portlet have also been done under commons-chain.
The proof of concept for portlet protocol and interaction between web
application portal and portlet container may soon be available under
struts-chain of struts nightly built.

One handy feature available in commons-chain is a self-contained
protocol context and service (portlet) catalog(s). The design pattern
for struts-chain context is just simple thread-safe singleton. The
performance can be better with cache and pool services.

I am currently looking into HiveMind and pico container as additional
services to Struts and Pluto.
