I've been looking at the new APIs that appeared since 1.3.x, and I think
it would be really nice if they all used the two-pool pattern
(result/scratch pools). But I really don't have time to try to
understand all the changes. It would be sort of nice if whoever is more
familiar with the new code adds the scratch pools, too.
