Subject Bread Crumb Navigation Portlet
Date Thu, 02 Sep 2004 06:18:00 GMT
Hello Peoples,

we are looking to implement a "bread crumb" (path) style navigation
portlet within Jetspeed 1.5 (and then Jetspeed 1.6 with the JSR 168
adapter when available).

By the term "bread crumb", I am referring to a "path" showing the location
of the current page (containing the navigation portlet) within the scope
of the site.

For example,

- If the browser was displaying the "Home" page, the "bread crumb" (path)
would be "Home"

- If the browser was displaying the "Entertainment" page, the "bread
crumb" (path) would be "Home > Entertainment"

- If the browser was displaying the "Moviest" page, the "bread crumb"
(path) would be "Home > Entertainment > Movies"

Each "node" in the bread crumb path is also a hyper-link to that area of
the site.

A online example can be seen at URL
"http://www.westernpower.com.au/html/home/smart_ways_to_save/brochures.html"
which shows the "bread crumb" as "Your Home > Smart Ways to Save >".

We would probably display the "bread crumb" portlet within the main
content area of the page, under the top level navigation header.

viz.

.-------------------------------------------------------.
| TOP LEVEL NAVIGATION HEADER |
|--------------------------------------------------------.
| .-------------------------------------------. |
| | BREAD CRUMB PORTLET | |
| .-------------------------------------------. |
| |
.--------------------------------------------------------.

This feature is quite common for many web sites with a single view.

Does this style of navigation have a general name ?

Has anybody seen or worked on a general approach (or pattern) for this
type of problem ?

It would seem this type of portlet could be used for many web sites
requiring a particular kind of navigation.

Comments and thoughts welcome.

Tim.
