I've tried this and it doesn't work in soft redirects.
The message is cleared on a soft redirect by Turbine (I assume).
Thus the passing of a msgid as a query parameter.
The msgid also gives us the advantage of internationalization.
I have also used a second parameter that I use, for the ICON to display (WARNING, ERROR, 
SUCCESS)

Im +1 on having a common status area though, just a matter of sorting out how its implemented.
Also want to add that some designers prefer the error to go at the bottom of the screen.
This reminds me of my old MFC programming days working on AutoCAD, where we had a special

COM component just for Status bars, where there were all kinds of statuses displayed.
This leads into something much more complex, like system portlets such as status bars...
