a few reasons..

first I dont want to have to learn velocity (or have my staff learn it)

second I want to create everything as close as I can to how I think the portal 
spec will pan out and I am sure it will not include anything about velocity in 
it..

if there is anything I can do to help get it working will 100% jsp let me know .
