Dang,
The standard portlets ( RSS, WebPagePortlet, HTML,...) do not need to 
communicate with each other.  In general, you must define the 
communication method used by your portlets.  This can be via a common 
back-end, a turbine service, an EJB server, ....

A parameter can be added to the URL that displays a page and your 
portlets can receive the parameter, but they can not change the value or 
add new parameters.
