Josh, in your sample project pom.xml file, the following build dependence
is not needed:

<dependency>
<groupId>org.apache.phoenix</groupId>
<artifactId>phoenix-server-client</artifactId>
<version>4.7.0-HBase-1.1-SNAPSHOT</version>
</dependency>
