I am using these variables in message activity and so that answers my
question. I guess I forgot to add the fact that I am using those
variables in messaging activity. Apologies.

Another case that might lead to the same error message is using this
"element" variable in a messaging activity (receive, invoke, reply,
...).
These activities all need a variable with messageType.
