It is not working for me on Ubuntu:14.04 and Ubuntu:15.10:

[root@jlarriba ~]# dirname "$0"
dirname: invalid option -- 'b'
Try 'dirname --help' for more information.

[root@jlarriba ~]# dirname -- "$0"
.

In ubuntu:14.04 was built using gcc and clang, in centos:7 only gcc.
