After you've had a chance to look those documents over, I would start by
picking the project you are most interested in and getting the latest
source from cvs/svn.  As you start to use/learn about the project,
you'll probably find areas you'd like to fix/improve.  Some projects
have a "help wanted" section of their site (not nearly enough); but for
the ones that do not, you can simply send an email to the dev list
asking if there's an area that needs help.
