No Problem. But then it is not possible to, e.g., convert DOS to Unix
linebreaks using regexp (I know there are other ways to do that, but
for the sake of the example...). 
Are there any precedences (sed, perl, ...)?

If it's just for not changing the behavior of the released version: If
that behavior was buggy anyway, I can't see a problem changing it ;-)
