The best way to answer these questions is to show the actual generated scripts that are executed.

   SET OUT=^>^>D:\jakarta\log\bootstrap-ant.html
   chdir /d D:\jakarta\jakarta-ant %OUT% 2>&1
   SET CLASSPATH=%CLASSPATH%;C:\opt\jaxp-1.1\jaxp.jar
   SET CLASSPATH=%CLASSPATH%;C:\opt\jaxp-1.1\crimson.jar
   call .\bootstrap.bat %OUT% 2>&1
   if errorlevel 1 SET STATUS=FAILED

Unix (bash):

   export OUT=\>\>/home/rubys/jakarta/log/bootstrap-ant.html
   eval "cd /home/rubys/jakarta/jakarta-ant $OUT 2>&1"
   export CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:$JAVA_HOME/lib/tools.jar
   export CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:/opt/jaxp-1.1/jaxp.jar
   export CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:/opt/jaxp-1.1/crimson.jar
   eval "./ $OUT 2>&1"
   test $? -ge 1 && export STATUS="FAILED"
